Caffeine has limits?!

Coffee Beans,

Health Canada recommends no more than 300 mg of caffeine each day for women and slightly more for men.  It’s a pretty smart guideline but it’s really easy to hit before you know it! That amount of caffeine is in about 3 small (8 oz) cups of coffee depending upon the brew and brand. Don’t kid yourself about decaf either! One coffee shop decaf contains about as much caffeine as another’s regular.  Know what you are drinking before you drink it.

The downside of caffeine is its side effects of muscle tremors, irregular heart rate, tendency to increase cholesterol levels and leach calcium from the bones and even links to cancer as well as reproductive health.  The upside is that in limited amounts it does have protective effects too and it tastes pretty amazing while warming you palms.

Many years ago, I switched from coffee to green tea and only occasionally steal a sip or two from a pal’s cup when the urge overwhelms me.  We hear all about how good green tea is for you, how anti-oxidant rich and tummy slimming such a sip can be, but that’s not why I drink it.

I drink loose leaf, organic Jasmine tea. It’s the same leaf that is in green tea (which is the same as black only in an unfermented state) with the addition of Jasmine leaves.  Now my morning smells like flowers. The same flowers that bloom in my friend, Babs’ yard in South Carolina in May when we enjoy a girls weekend there. The same jasmine that perfumed my childhood trips to Florida each and every late winter/early spring.  It’s the memories of the smells that comfort me. Its primal, our connection to smells. Inviting within (consuming) that which comforts us in our surroundings is instinctive. That’s the good for you part…not the polyphenols, I’m sure of it. If I can control any caffeine tremors while enjoying such a cup, why wouldn’t I?
