Ace of Hearts – Get Moving, Keep Moving

It goes without saying, that the secret, if there were one, to better health, is move around more.

But there is no secret. Rules, yes, guidelines, for sure and no-no’s, absolutely. But secrets no.

Exercise however, is the one true guarantee to help your health in so many ways. I should know as I am an exercise maniac. 6 years ago, I was heavy and feeling less than stellar. Far less.. You may have read about this already but I’ll recap. One day, after many years of a sedentary lifestyle, I looked at myself both how I looked and how I felt and decided it was time to get healthy. I have come a long way and am still not where I want to be but thankfully, exercise has helped me get very close.

Sure, in the early stages of my quest for great health, I was extremely nutrition-conscious and managed a low calorie, well rounded diet for a couple of months. I managed to lose some weight and regain some good positive results in how I felt. Then, I upped the exercise, running in particular and the rest of the weight I wanted to lose came off very quickly and I started to feel better than I have in years. That led to more exercise, more running, and eventually, marathons. One marathon led to another and in a matter of 4 years since my first one, I have run 23 altogether. Add them in with all of the 5km, 10km, half marathon and 30k races plus to 50k races and I have run about 75 events in the last 5 years. I love the competition, mainly with myself but with other members of my age group and I am still trying to see how fast I can get. I have room for improvement.

That’s what led me to Theresa and the quest to ‘Ace Your Health’. Over the years, the running was so successful at keeping me fit that I have gotten too negligent of the other aspects of being healthy, such as more good foods, less bad foods, more sleep less beer, more well rounded strengthening and less focus on tiring my legs out. So far, it’s been going well but I still have room for improvement.

My first order of business now that the Spring racing season is winding to a close, is to revisit the entire first section, Spades, of Ace Your Health for a little review. And to write out a schedule of what and when to eat. I need a more regimented plan to make sure I am consuming more of what my body needs and less of what it doesn’t. Discipline, and a game plan are what I am missing still. I have so much knowledge but such poor execution. I am looking forward to the next few stages of Ace Your Health as I mentally plan to focus on why I joined forces with Theresa in the first place.

You know how we have a little angel and  little devil on each of our shoulders? Yep, the little devil on mine keeps kicking the little angel’s butt and I know this needs to change. I know, I know.

My apologies, I strayed from the topic but given that exercise is the topic, the little devil told me it was ok

Dave & Anita

At age 43 and neither unfit, nor of perfect health, we have a lifestyle that requires constant focus. The “go, go, go” lifestyle of a being working parents gets the better of us. 5 years ago, we made major life decisions to quit smoking and get healthy, which for the most part has been successful. Anita, is an outstanding partner in our busy lifestyle and manages to be a dedicated mother. As a full time worker who travels regularly, she is no stranger to the dangers of living the life where meals are being fit into tiny windows of time each day. Together, we are making this journey even more interesting as we move through the Ace Your Health program and share how they apply it applies to our entire family. As a recreational runners, you can follow along to see how this quest of 'Ace Your Health' improves our marathon performances - click here to visit my running and fitness blog
