My journey through Ace Your Health – the Nine of Spades

At the start of this week’s chapter, Theresa talks about her battle with her book club and cheese platters. My battle? In all honesty, this week is has to be writers block. I know I need to write about cheese and tactics I use to avoid it. But really all I want to write about is me.

I don’t really eat a lot of cheese. I avoid it at gatherings because to be truthful here, it grosses me out. People usually people pick it at with their fingers; and we have no idea where those fingers have just been. May sound alarmist to you, but that is one of my pet peeves. Followed closely by waiters who put their fingers around the rim of my glass.

I really want to tell you about my time with my sister and mom. How we spent the day shopping and laughing. How we went to see Billy Elliot in the evening and spent a wonderful night at the Toronto Westin Harbour Castle. How I had the most fabulous sleep (have you heard about their heavenly beds? It’s all true), not woken to the cries for “mommy cuddles” or ear piercing snores emanating from deep within my husband. How the hotel serves Starbucks coffee and offers up a delicious morning buffet (I pigged out on the cream of wheat).

I really want to tell you about all the laps I have been swimming in our pool. How every night I try to put on my bathing suit and get in about 20-30 laps before bed. Or how my kids are spending hours in the pool, laughing and swimming until we make them go to bed.

I really want to tell you about a new wine I have tried from Australia. Fifth Leg Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. Delish. And it pairs amazingly well with all the barbequed seafood we have been enjoying.

And lastly, I really want to tell you about how I am settling into life in Toronto. My new’ish home. How I am slowly making new friends and creating a nice life for myself and my family. How my house is almost done its renovation and my home feels like MY home.

But, I am here to talk about cheese. When I eat cheese, which is not very often, I can’t seem to stop. I absolutely, positively adore goat cheese. In particular, the varieties which come from the Salt Island Cheese Company. I am in love with triple cream brie. And I am a sucker for a good Gouda. I could eat cheese and eat cheese and eat more cheese. So, knowing this is one of my downfalls in life, I avoid it. I keep my temptation at bay by simply not buying it.

Cheese, in my opinion, is one of those things in life that needs to be enjoyed in moderation. Why eat so-so cheese, when there is fabulous cheese? Fabulous cheese, if eaten too often becomes boring cheese (and creates cheesy thighs – an altogether different species from a brick of cheese).

Cheese, like a good and rare bottle of scotch, should be a food for celebration. A food item we eat when life hands us an occasion for celebration. And with that attitude in mind, I am heading outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and eat some camembert and crackers. Why not, spring is worth celebrating, right?



Heather Lochner is a mother to two wonderful and energetic children and a freelance writer. Together with her children, husband and dog, she has recently relocated to Toronto after spending 15 years on the West Coast – many of which were spent living aboard her sailboat. Heather loves to exercise but always finds a reason to sit on the couch. While she knows carrots, whole wheat pasta and lean meat are good to eat, Heather loves to munch on a burger, chicken wings and poutine.     Although I can’t eat dairy, I agree with you that cheese should be eaten in moderation!
    Good job with getting lots of exercise in your pool!
