Five Spice Chicken Legs

I love this chicken recipe because it comes together in a snap, serves a crowd easily and can be cooked in the oven or BBQ in one pan.  Plus, when its cooked, any leftovers turn into a Vietnamese Pho Soup to die for! The secret ingredient is a package of grated cabbage (sometimes called cole slaw mix)  Cabbage is one of the healthiest vegetables and if it’s all prepared for you, well, that’s even better!


4 +4 second supper


18 skinless chicken drumsticks

1/2 cup (125 mL) low-sodium soy sauce

1/4 cup (50 mL) honey

2 tbsp (30 mL) five-spice powder

1 pkg (16 oz/454 g) coleslaw cabbage mix

Divide between 2 resealable plastic bags.

Add half the soy sauce, honey and five-spice powder to each bag; seal bags and rub on all sides

to blend. Refrigerate to marinate at least 1 hour or up to 48 hours.

Spread coleslaw mix on large foil-lined baking sheet; top with chicken and marinade. Bake

In 400°F (200°C) oven, uncovered, for 30 to 35 minutes, turning once, until juices run clear

when chicken is pierced. Stir slaw if it starts to burn on edges. (can be done on bbq, on low, lid down)


Five-spice powder is a great Chinese staple that usually can be found in supermarkets. If you can’t find it, make your own with equal parts ground aniseed, ground ginger, cinnamon and allspice.
