Healthy Holiday Dining

Are you hoping to get through the holiday season without gaining that pound or two? When you figure out that our entire obesity crisis consists of only one pound gained (and not lost) per year leading to the 10 pounds we put on per decade it sheds a whole new light.  That single pound is often acquired during the holidays. The trick is to either manage it wisely and/or drop it immediately in January. This way you can still, quite literally, have your cake and eat it to.

 

On the management end, here are three easy tips to prevent the problem:

1. Increase physical activity during the holiday week(s) by 15 minutes each day
2. Drink more water to fill you up
3. Eat more fibre to make you feel full and able to resist

Your cheat sheet for eating at holiday sit down dinners:

1. Fill up on a plate of green vegetables,  broth based soup or salad before you go
2. Before dinner avoid the chips, nuts, sweets
3. Position yourself next to the veggies and dip that your brought yourself and away from the cheese platter
4. When dinner arrives, fill your plate with protein and “un-fatted” vegetables  first

 

5. If you don’t have a choice, eat around the following items and only enjoy a tablespoon of the dangerous dudes:

  • Mashed squash
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Buttered carrots
  • Stuffing
  • Any “casserole” type dish
  • Gravy
  • Cheese sauce
  • Salad dressing

 

Wait an hour to be absolutely sure you actually want dessert and that it is good enough to be worth the effort.  If so, serve yourself a small piece and savor every mouthful.

Done right and you will taste your way through some delicious fun without doing yourself in. Done wrong and you will have an extra couple of pounds to lose on top of the few you picked up and forgot about last year.

    i have to laugh at all the ‘common sense’ approaches to christmas and calories that come out at this time of year – i’ve never known ANYONE to care about what they eat or how much at christmas in my 65 years of gluttony – and i wouldnt WANT to know anyone who is so uptight and politically correct about something that happens just once a year – those people need to ‘lighten up’ in a very different way
