Why on earth do we cram so much fete-ing into one month? Honestly, is it just me or are you feeling anti-social and wiped out by the time Christmas rolls around? I love to meet and eat and I live for the moment when I, or anyone else in the room, is moved to guffaw a big loud belly laugh. That said, if we force feed ourselves for an entire month, does anything more than a nervous titter come out of you by the 25th when you HAVE to spend the day with family?

It’s no small wonder we all go on diets in January. We don’t want to poke one more cookie in nor kiss one more powdered and perfumed cheek. Maybe it’s true that we are made for gluttony. It has long been believed that our bodies are constructed for the “feast or famine” lifestyle with our “thrifty gene”. It is believed that we developed the ability to store fat so we could survive the oncoming period of lack.  So maybe we have to manufacture the “lack”.

I do my best to eat light and lean when it is in my control. Loading up on fruits and veg for breakfast may sound like crazy talk but when I have a lunch celebration, a “just drinks” celebration and a holiday dinner all in one day, what else am I going to do?   I admit that this, um, “style” of mine is a titch too close to “disordered eating” but I feel like crap if I don’t control the process somehow.  I always choose fish and vegetables if available or go with the vegetarian option. Not because I am a vegetarian but because I know that if I am eating restaurant or catered food it DOES have more salt and fat than I am used to and  removing what other fats I can is just smart. (note: I didn’t say it wasn’t boring)

What really gets gunked this time of year is our livers  and it may be just that which makes us feel sluggish.  It is not just overindulgence in alcohol that does it.  Fatty foods,  the combo of acetaminophen with booze, too much sugar and any more than one glass of wine a day is doing damage.  Gunk up the liver and it’s a little like having a plugged up sink. Oh, stuff may still drain, but it ain’t going to be effective or efficient and all that detritus in the drain needs to be removed eventually and one way or another.

Either we can all meet here in January to figure out how to clean up the December mess or we can find a way to manage the ordeal together right now. Got any ideas?

    Don’t Diet…period

    “…remember that prolonged dieting (this one [meaning the Atkins diet], low-fat, low-calorie, or a combination) tends to shut down thyroid function. This is usually not a problem with the thyroid gland (therefore blood tests are likely to be normal) but with the liver, which fails to convert T4 into the more active thyroid principle, T3. The diagnosis is made on clinical ground with the presence of fatigue, sluggishness, dry skin, coarse or falling hair, an elevation in cholesterol, or a low body temperature. I ask my patients to take four temperature readings daily before the three meals and near bedtime. If the average of all these temperatures, taken for at least three days, is below 97.8 degrees F (36.5 C), that is usually low enough to point to this form of thyroid problem; lower readings than that are even more convincing.” – Dr. Atkins

      Hi Marla,
      Breakfast, in my opinion, is no different from any other meal. We tend to get all carby on it, don’t we. Have an egg, some cooked spinach and a piece of toast, it will hold you for 3 hours or so when you will have some almonds and fruit. Or, check out my “magic muesli” which can be made ahead and stored for up to 5 days in the fridge. It counts as one protein, one fruit and one carb (just like the egg breakfast!) Let me know how it goes!
