Planters Improvements

99018 Lightly_s Almonds

I gotta tell ya, it’s a lot to ask of a mom juggling busy kids, all those meals, that house, those birthday parties and maybe a job and a dog. Oy. And then I come along and ask that you also consider the environment when you make your food purchasing choices. What’s inside the package matters just a titch more than the package itself, in my humble opinion. I am more about the food than the package but it is nice to see some manufacturers giving a hoot about the other end of what they produce.

For instance, I am a big nut fan. (In fact, Dan Matheson, the co-anchor of CTV News Express has teased me on many occasions, on camera, about how often I suggest nuts as a snack and a good dietary fat contributor.) In my book, Ace Your Health, I clarify the difference between a snack and a treat (nuts make the cut).  So when Planters decided to change their packaging to use recycled material, I was doubly chuffed.

To me, finding health and a healthy balance is all about moving the needle, in tiny increments, to make unnoticeable change and a yet a big difference. If I can get improved, sodium reduced, nourishing snack that is also doing its level best for the environment, why wouldn’t I? Here’s the skinny on Planters’ improvements:

The outside:

  • The new 100% Recyclable packaging  is made from recycled PET
  • over one million tins annually have been converted to the new 100% recyclable packaging, diverting them from landfills

The inside of each lightly sea salted almonds, peanuts, cashews and deluxe mix are:

  • 50% less sodium (than regular 275g tin)
  • Loaded with nutrients like magnesium, calcium and vitamin E
  • Full of good fats
  • Contain fibre
  • A delicious and filling snack, a handful will do!

And while I can’t pack them as school snacks, a tub or two is always strategically placed in our house.

Planters has supported this blog and they want you to know that they are nuts about the Environment! From April 2nd to June 15th Canadians can visit facebook.com/PlantersCanada to vote for their favourite Canadian Environmental Charity, organization, or community project to receive $10,000!

To celebrate the new containers Planters is also giving one lucky winner a $20,000 Energy Efficient Kitchen Makeover! (I can’t enter, so you definitely should!)  The contest runs April 2nd to June 15th and Canadians can enter daily at facebook.com/PlantersCanada

Win, win, right?

Theresa Albert

I love food, try to watch my weight, know more than I want to about healthy living (sometimes I wish I knew less so I wouldn’t feel so guilty when I stumble), am a daughter, sister, friend, mom and wife who worries and scurries the meals onto the table. It is for all these reasons that I completed my nutrition, RNCP designation, wrote my book, hosted my Food Network show, consult with food companies to urge them to get it right (or at least better), constantly write about it, research it, all of this so I can cut through the nutrition and food “news” clutter. Happy to share with friends!
