Cops Help Stop Cancer

Officers will once again face scissors, shavers and razors in support of cancer research.

This year, Deputy Chief Mike Federico among others, will do it again!

Cops For Cancer fundraising is now underway, leading up to the main event on May 12 at Yorkdale mall, where dozens of Service members will shave their heads to support the Canadian Cancer Society.

Deputy Chief Mike Federico, Staff Sergeant Chris Boddy and Constable Tony Vella will be among the first to have their heads shaved, starting at 1 p.m. The event will see many more police, auxiliary officers and civilian members participating, up to 4 p.m.

“If shaving my head can lend some small support to families affected by cancer, it’s a small price to pay,” said Boddy, who has, like many, seen friends and colleagues battle the disease.

“Beyond raising money, we want to bring more awareness to an illness that can be eradicated through research.”

Officers will be cheered on by event co-hosts Theresa Albert, a nutritionist and food and health communicator, and Planet Maurie Sherman, senior producer of the Roz & Mocha Show and reporter for KiSS 92.5.

Yorkdale visitors will also have a chance to pose for photos with Toronto Police Service Police Dog Services dogs and officers as well as members of the Emergency Task Force and their bomb-disposal robot.

Const. Tony Vella said the event brings the community together to fight cancer.

“It is unbelievable how one disease can affect so many lives. It is harder for one person to beat cancer but much easier when we all take a stand.”

The Cops for Cancer program has raised more than $45 million across Canada! Since 1994 when it began in Edmonton.

The Canadian Cancer Society funds research on all types of cancer, offers information on cancer-risk reduction and treatment and support for people living with cancer and their families. For more information, visit cancer.ca

I will personally be there to shave some heads (just as a small change from my usual behaviour of knocking some sense into them ;) )

Theresa Albert

Theresa Albert

I love food, try to watch my weight, know more than I want to about healthy living (sometimes I wish I knew less so I wouldn’t feel so guilty when I stumble), am a daughter, sister, friend, mom and wife who worries and scurries the meals onto the table. It is for all these reasons that I completed my nutrition, RNCP designation, wrote my book, hosted my Food Network show, consult with food companies to urge them to get it right (or at least better), constantly write about it, research it, all of this so I can cut through the nutrition and food “news” clutter. Happy to share with friends!
