Bacon Topped Sundae? Come on!

Theresa Albert Headshot.2

Funny. When I got the call to go in to CTV Newschannel to comment on the new fast food bacon topped sundae, my first reaction was “disgusting!” But on the way, there, I realized that bacon is a hugely popular ingredient right now.  As usual, chefs have led the charge, bringing bacon into all kinds of new savory and sweet dishes.  That popularity has trickled down into the mainstream and has reached the masses when it graces the fast food menus.

But is it really so disgusting? It contains 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar. All completely useless calories.  Don’t even try to tell me that there is protein and calcium in the milk.  You can get both without clogging your heart and liver with crap.

The bottom line is that it is not about the bacon. The bacon is a gimmick. The cherry on top, so to speak. The sundae calorie bomb itself is the issue.  Here is what I ended up saying on CTV with Jacqueline Milczarek .  I think its good advice…you?

I love food, try to watch my weight, know more than I want to about healthy living (sometimes I wish I knew less so I wouldn’t feel so guilty when I stumble), am a daughter, sister, friend, mom and wife who worries and scurries the meals onto the table. It is for all these reasons that I completed my nutrition, RNCP designation, wrote my book, hosted my Food Network show, consult with food companies to urge them to get it right (or at least better), constantly write about it, research it, all of this so I can cut through the nutrition and food “news” clutter. Happy to share with friends!
